‘Outsiders’ In’: Reception & Discussion Exploring Unconventional Art & People of South Florida
For Immediate Release
Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Join Florida Storyteller, Dr. Caren Neile and talented exhibiting artists for ‘Outsiders’ In’ Exploring Unconventional Art & People of South Florida, a wine and cheese reception, discussion, and art exhibition, (Friday) January 27, 2017, at 7 PM. at Fort Lauderdale History Museum — doors open at 6:30 PM.
‘Outsiders’ In’— explores the special connection of Outsider art with local culture. Outsider Art is produced by self-taught creatives or those who are not part of the artistic establishment.
“It typically refers to the visual arts. In fact, a wide range of pioneering ‘creatives’ aren’t considered, and don’t necessarily consider themselves, artists,” said Dr. Neil.
Neil will explore how — and why do we — determine who is an artist in our community, who is simply living their art? This insightful discussion questions and ultimately disrupts boundaries between inside and outside, success and failure, art… and life.
Caren S. Neile, Ph.D, MFA, is a professional storyteller and an affiliate professor at Florida Atlantic University, where she teaches storytelling studies. The former chair of the National Storytelling Network, she performs and teaches throughout the nation and abroad. Her selected South Florida stories can be heard on Sundays, at 4pm EST on www.wlrn.org or 91.3 FM and 91.5 FM in South Florida.
A ticket to the event entitles you to a raffle entry for a signed poster by some of South Florida’s best known Outsider Artists and other surprises!
In December, the Fort Lauderdale History Museum kicked off a three month exhibition, ‘Reinterpreting the Pioneer through Outsider Art’ — exploring distinctive culture through the lens of noted self taught artists and creatives making art outside of conventional society. Through March 2017, leaders from academia join the community in conversations discussing art, architecture, design and discovering the beauty of the vernacular in South Florida.
