For Immediate Release (Miami, FL) March 21: The Martin Luther King Economic Development Corporation (MLKEDC), The City of Miami, Miami Dade County and Community Leaders invite the public to participate in the Unity March Against Gun Violence and the 15th Annual Reclaim The Dream Candlelight Memorial Service to be held Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Athalie Range Park, 525 NW Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Miami, Florida.
April 4th marks the 50th Anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Your commitment to our community on this historic date is essential to help us commemorate the life and works of Dr. King Jr. and “Reclaim The Dream.”
Reclaim The Dream is a campaign to revitalize MLK Boulevard in Miami, Florida and to provide our youth with much needed scholarships for higher education. National statistics show that throughout the United States, streets named in honor of Dr. King, Jr. are located in communities that are plagued with poverty and suffer the ancillary affects thereof such as blight, high unemployment, crime, poor performing schools, and apathy.
This historic event will start at 5:30pm with the Unity March Against Gun Violence — in memory of those lost to this senseless crime will precede the main event and will be led by the Miami City Commission Chairman, Keon Hardemon, Mayor Francis Suarez, Clergy members and community leaders. This procession will include students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Parkland, Florida.
The stage program will begin at 6:01pm (the time of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) to include a momentous Candlelight Reflection Prayer led by Clergy representing multiple religious faiths and will conclude with a live gospel performance by Kirk Franklin, aka “The Reigning King of Urban Gospel,” a multi-award winning artist, musician, choir director, and author (twelve Grammy Awards), and Shirley Caesar, aka “The First Lady of Gospel,” a multi-award award-winning artist and songwriter (eleven Grammy Awards and seven Dove Awards). This outdoor event is free and open to the general public.
